Derby Name: Caley Kapowski
Started Fresh Meat with Glasgow Roller Derby (at the time Glasgow Roller Girls, old school) September 2011, had a slight breakage so had to stop then returned to derby January 2012.
Teams played for:
I co-captained Glasgow Roller Derby Cannie Gingers and my GRD home team the Tyrannosaurus Wrecks Mixed teams – the Injustice League, Ghostblockers and the Trapezey Riders. I guest skated for Newtown Roller Girls and I have played for the Northern Fights and more recently the Fight Hawks.
Tyrannosaurus Wrecks vs Deathstars, a home team game in April 2013.
How did you get into roller derby?
I was living in Peebles after finishing Uni and saw an advert for an ARRG game. I looked them up online and was going to join but couldn’t fit it in around work so when I moved back to Glasgow I joined GRD (after wussing out a few times)
Favourite derby moment:
I have 2; Winning MVP in the Glasgow vs Fierce Valley game which was my last game as part of GRD. I cried. There are pictures of me crying and clutching my certificate. My second was playing in the first ever Fight Hawks game. I mentor fresh meat and got to skate alongside people I'd seen go from Bambi to bouting. I was so proud of my wee mentlings who are all grown up.
Most embarrassing derby moment:
At a sur5al tournament I spent 1 minute and 32 seconds thinking I had ripped my bum open after a really bad fall on a concrete track. The rest of the jam was spent frantically shouting at my teammates ‘I think I’m bleeding from my butt!!!! I hope it’s blood…what if it’s not blood? Oh my God what do I do??!?’ Meanwhile I was blocking the opposing jammer this whole time, she was quite freaked out. Turns out there was no blood (or anything else) just a really, really bad bruise. With hindsight I overacted slightly.
How did you choose your derby name and number?
I love Saved by the Bell and my name is Caley. My skate number used to be X0X0 because it was cute and went with the name. But when I moved to Aberdeen there were a lot of numbers with zero in them so I changed it to 12 because my sister’s birthday was the 12th.
What advice would you give to anyone interested in trying roller derby?
Do it and don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Fall over, get back up and keep giving it your all. And have fun.
What's your favourite thing about GCRD?
The people! Derby people are always the best people. I only transferred to GCRD in March 2014 and was so nervous because I only knew 2 people in Aberdeen but straight away I had a bunch of awesome friends. They made me feel so welcome and I love GCRD, they’re my family and I can’t imagine not being part of it.
I’m a nervous vomiter so I like to eat 2 breakfasts on bout day. I like to double check that none of the rules have changed last minute, I triple check my kit bag and then I listen to some RuPaul and get my sass on.
Any skaters that inspire you?
So many skaters! I totally fangirled over Ruby Riot, Jill Riot and Fight Cub before I moved to GCRG and they, and the rest of the fights inspire me every day. Sarah McMillan of GRD and Team Ireland, Crazy Legs from ARRG, Raw Heidi from LRG, Dew Dropper from Rebellion RD and Splat from GRD and Team Scotland and so many more! Anyone who shows up to practice determined to give it their all inspires me.
What would you do differently if you were starting out today?
Buy skates that fit, I wore a size 6 skate for a year before realising I needed a 5 and then suddenly I could transition. Rest when I’m injured/sick and do not play a bout with pneumonia…it won’t end well. Have a nice time and don’t get disheartened when you don’t progress as quickly as you want to because guess what, you’re getting better every time you try. Even if you don’t notice it yourself. Cross train! And try jamming! I’m ashamed to say I didn’t jam much when I started scrimmaging so jamming is something I’m not skilled at and I love pivoting…kinda need to be able to jam too… so yeah, I’d just try everything and so what if I suck initially.
Bonts, my wheels are a 91 and 93 diagonal combo and an avenger plate which I adore! Standard 187 pads and scabs gaskets, a triple 8 helmet.
To be a blammer!!
Hobbies outside of GCRD:
I’m a trainee ref for the Granite City Brawlers so lots of rules reading! I am UKRDA rep for GCRD and also run the GCRD Instagram and blog for Roller Derby Blog Scotland which keeps me quite busy. I like making friends with neighbourhood cats and watching Netflix and drinking herbal tea. I'm a big fan of crafting and wearing sweatpants.
