This Saturday (7th October) is your chance to get involved with Granite City Roller Derby as we look for new skaters, referees and NSO’s (Non-Skating Officials) to join us.

We welcome all genders, all body types, fitness levels and all levels of skater, from never skated before to skate park vets.

The first session is free and all we ask is that you are over 18, wear comfortable, sports style clothing and bring water.

What is Roller Derby all about? Is it for me? What will I get from it?

To answer these burning questions, we spoke to some of our current and graduating members from our new skater course.

GCRD are coming to the end of the season. Last weekend the Northern Fights took on Auld Reekie Roller Girls All Star Reserves in Edinburgh, the Fight Hawks will be competing in a tournament on the 25th November and last month we celebrated Granite City Roller Derby Home Season Finale! 2016 has been a massively successful year for GCRD, both on and off the track, which was rounded off in style on October 1st at our Home Season Finale in association with our awesome sponsors, Krakatoa!

With the Northern Fights finishing the British Championships at the top of Tier 4 North, and the Fight Hawks going from strength to strength since their debut in 2015, GCRD took the opportunity to end the home season by thanking our outstanding skaters, refs, officials, committee members and of course, our main sponsor, Krakatoa.

GCRD began an official sponsorship deal with Krakatoa in early 2016, which has been a massive support to the whole league; allowing us to invest in brand new sponsored uniforms and helmets for the teams, host more home games than ever before, and provide access to an awesome post-bout venue for our own members and our visiting teams.

Support for amateur sports teams is vital to their progression; from developing members, facilitating travel and provision of promotional opportunities in the local community. As Roller Derby is still a growing sport, the association between GCRD and Krakatoa has been instrumental in encouraging interest in the league locally and promoting the sport to our home supporters. In return, Krakatoa's regulars can reserve the best track-side seats to see the action first-hand, before getting to know the teams better in the bar afterwards. To top it all off, Krakatoa customers can now order our very own GCRD Tiki cocktail in the bar, the flaming teal-coloured Creepy Octopus!

Looking forward to 2017, GCRD hopes to hold many more awesome events in Aberdeen's best tiki bar, and welcome many more of our Krakatoa friends to see the home game action! Massive thanks to Krakatoa for a brilliant year, we can't wait to work with you more in 2017!

Granite City Roller Derby host their final double header of the year at Aberdeen's Beach Leisure Centre on Saturday 1st October.

Granite's Fight Hawks will be opening the bout, taking to the track against Mean City Roller Derby; and Tier 4 North champions, the Northern Fights, will compete with a mixed Dream Team featuring skaters from across the county. Don't miss it!

Not familiar with the game? There’s a brief explanation of rules, friendly faces, a raffle and plenty of cake!

All proceeds from our cake stall will be going to Aberdeen Cyrenians. As part of their Harvest Appeal we will also be collecting tinned and dried food at this bout - so please bring something along to donate!

Doors open at 12.30pm, first whistle at 1.10pm. Entry is £4 on the door - 12 and unders go free!

Celebrate with GCRD in style at the After Party - 6.00pm at Krakatoa. https://www.facebook.com/events/309511142757815/

Are you looking for an exciting way to get fit? Want to make awesome new friends? Or maybe you just really like the sound of getting involved in one of the UK’s fastest growing full contact sports?

Granite City Roller Derby are opening the doors and inviting people of all ages and abilities to come give Roller Derby a whirl. Whether you spent your childhood on your pink Barbie quads or you’ve never skated in your life, the six month beginners course will take you from the very beginning and show you all the skills and drills you need to be confident out on the track.

Even if you’re not sure about the rough and tumble of playing the game, there are opportunities for both women and men to train as referees, who are essential to the game. So if you like the sound of learning to skate, but aren’t ready for full contact, then there’s always a space for you with our beloved “Zeebs”.

The first session is entirely free and kit is provided, so all you need to bring is your lovely self (and maybe some water).

We look forward to seeing you there!
