March's Skater of the Month is one of our Intermediate skaters who is on the verge of graduating and already has her sights set on her first Fight Hawks game. Ladies and Gentlemen we give you - Tinytaes!

What is you day job?

Day job: Certs coordinator at an oil company

Night Job: bar tender at Aberdeen Altens hotel

What are your hobbies (other than skating)?

Dodgeball and Off-roading.

How did you get started in Roller Derby?

I saw the intake poster for it, didn't know anyone going but thought if I don't go I'll regret it so I went and met an amazing bunch of people who I can now call friends.

Do you have any advice for anyone starting out?

Do it. Don't think about it, don't procrastinate just go for it. If you don't you will absolutely regret it!

Which derby person do you look up to most/aspire to be like?

Krusty, Pert Hits or Un-Fairley. All of them have been amazing coaches from one stage

to the other. (All the other coaches are obvs amazing too!!) They are all good skaters for different reasons but also amazing role models in the Derby world.

What is your proudest Derby achievement?

Being able to do an apex jump and clearing Fairley's leg and scrimming with the Hawks.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome our Skater of the Month for February, Line-Up for the Northern Fights, Co-Captain of the Fight Hawks, Pert Hits!

We caught up with her for a chat.

What is your day job?

I'm a teacher. Qualified as a maths teacher but my current post in a social work setting sees me teach other bits and pieces too.

What do you do for fun (besides Derby)?

Other than skating I'm a bit of a craft fiend. Cross stitching, crochet, little bit of knitting... a fair few other things. And whilst it's not a hobby, walking my dog seems like all I ever do these days.

How did you get started in Roller Derby?

One evening I had a passing fancy to go to a roller disco. Quick search on the Internet and whilst there are no roller disco facilities in Aberdeen...there was a roller derby team. Persuaded a friend of mine to come along with me to the intake and that's it. Never looked back.

Do you have any advice for people just starting out?

My advice would be to someone just starting out - NSO. It's a good way to meet more folk in your league, super helpful when it comes to game day but for those looking to compete, its the best way to get a good handle on the rules before you start competing

What's your ideal skate setup?

I know nothing about gear. I'm the worst. I like my metal plates because I'm a bigger lass and feel they are less likely to snap than plastic ones. I skate in Riddell 265 boots. And my wheels are round. ish. Slightly coned. But it's ok.

What is your proudest Derby moment?

Proudest moment? Just one? That's an impossible task! I've been derbying for 6 years. And it seems like each year there's something else to be proud of.

One of my fondest memories was when I was fairly fresh mins passed. And had scrimmed a handful of times. I found the infamous Riot sisters kept gunning for me. Whilst annoying and terrifying, someone told me it's because they found me a threat. I don't even care if that's not true. It's my memory and I'm keeping it!

This month we get to introduce you to one of our fabulous refs: Jaffa Skates. Our refs are there at all our training and scrim sessions and keep us in line ;) We had to share both of these pics with you!

We've been catching up with him;

What is your day job?

I work for a department store as a customer delivery installer.

What do you do out with roller derby?

I am a geek. I collect comics, comic art, play RPGs, XBox and never seem to have enough books to read.

Why did you join roller derby?

Two of my friends ( Blackjack Belle & Grim'n'Bareit) were into derby and kept asking me along. Watched a game it looked fun so signed up for next intake and loved it

Why did you become a ref?

When I started out there wasn't any men's leagues it was just the reffing and NSOing

What advice would you give someone in Roller Derby?

Don't be worry about falling, everyone does it. Just means your pushing yourself, learning new skills.

Reffing to you in three words?

Fun, crews, cake

This month we get to introduce you to one of the Northern Fight's latest 2016 Debutants and Fight Hawks skater, Mean MaSheena!

We've been catching up with her;

Any tips for anyone that plays roller derby?

Spend most of any free training time you have really working on the skills you struggle with and talk to fellow skaters that have nailed it. Getting good advice from your team-mates on specific techniques is a brilliant way to break them down and master them – everyone is really good at something and they are usually willing to share advice. Being brave and trying new skills is the best way to be a good all-round skater.

One positive thing roller derby has brought to your life?

I am fitter than I have ever been in my life without it seeming like a chore. I was never into sports or fitness before joining Roller Derby but skating and cross-training for skating is easy because I love it and I always want to be better.

What is your favourite thing about GCRD?

GCRD is a crazy mix of different people who all work really well together. The whole league is dedicated and focussed to make us the best we can be as a group but also as individual members.

What is your party trick?

I stopped doing party tricks after an ill-timed Flaming Sambuca incident.

What is your Netflix binge?

Currently Black Sails, but House is probably my all-time favourite.

What is your dream holiday destination?

A very remote cottage in the mountains with a log fire and a hot tub. It doesn’t really matter where in the world it is as long as it is snowy and secluded.

If you have a bucket list what is your number one thing to do?

Travel the Trans-Siberian Railway from end to end.

What's your favourite drink?

I’m a craft beer girl, so anything with a ton of flavour and brewed with a bit of passion usually goes down well.

Just in time for this Saturdays British Championship game (20th Feb), this skater of the month plays for our A team, the Northern Fights. Here's Sho Time!

We have been catching up with her;

What is your day job?

I work as a school science technician; making up chemicals, fixing equipment, setting things on fire.

What do you do out with roller derby?

Other than derby I like to make art, I draw and I dabble in graphic design (although a lot of that ends up being derby related anyway!). I also love video games and comic books. Currently playing Witcher 3 and my fave series right now is Saga.

Why did you join roller derby?

I joined Derby for fitness, because I missed having a sport, and because I had just come out of studying and I didn't know what to do with my life after regaining free time.

Any advice you would give someone within roller derby?

My advice to people in derby is to protect yourself. I think I take this through from past taekwondo training. For example- don't show your opponent your sternum or your ribs if it's going to hurt you, use your arms for protection and turn your torso. I've also been trying to improve my avoidance by changing speed and direction, and not just soaking up the hits. There can be this "tough it out" attitude- and you do need a bit of that- but to last in derby you also need to avoid injury!

If you could have custom skates, what would they be?

I love skate hardware. There's loads of stuff I'd love to try! I think the Roll-line DB12, custom colour antiks, and if they could make me some Morph wheels with a metal hub please as well.

Your greatest achievement to date?

My greatest achievement… in terms of difficulty it was probably passing my degree in pharmacy but it hasn't been much use to me since! My partner and I bought a house last year and that has been the best thing, we love our little nerdy haven.
